UNILAG: Calling a spade a spade

I have searched for answers, I have asked questions, and I have tried making sense of what I have both heard and seen. But it seems the more I dig, the more elusive situation gets. The University of Lagos' restoration of its students' union; the election that produced its first president since 2005; and the subsequent election which up till now, raised unanswered questions have all come together to inspire this piece.

It was glaring to the very politically conscious few within the educational milieu, that the University of Lagos Students' Union elections which was held on the 22nd of September this year, was one which raised a lot of eye brows and apprehension.

Prior to the election, a lot of students harbored reservations; latent, though it seemed. So it was no surprise that it later translated into the present harsh realities - the noted irregularities at the election.

It was the school's policy that no candidate must have or have had a carryover in any course prior to and in the course of contesting for any ULSU post. In the spirit of upholding this principle, some candidates were disqualified. But claims lingered that some were not disqualified as the policy demands.

We had waited patiently for every possible anomaly to be rectified or for some explanations to be given. But non was forthcoming and our patience was depleting. This is surely an unfinished business and the school management owes its students undiluted answers.

Yes, the school management sponsored and conducted the elections. This is unquestionably right, owing to the fact that The Union is still in its infancy. What we seek to understand is: Why were records of culpable students not made public even on popular demand, before, during and after the election? Why did one of the aspirant, indeed, the one that went on to win the election, withdraw from the debate organized by the Academic Staff Union of Universities? Why must we (the students) always play the thespians and act the fool? Why must we be at the receiving end of its tactile strokes of deception, damaging delirium and such other shenanigans as it sees fit to inflict on our intelligence?

Such was the management's predisposition to artifice that we can brazenly say it had constituted a ghost committee to oversee the reported irregularities that trailed the election.

One aspirant said it was a case of sour grapes, according to him, "Every quarter in the University of Lagos is satisfied with the results...In every election there will always be winners and losers" This statement obviously tells you who he is.

Another aspirant thinks quite the opposite. He said it was all a big conspiracy. "Although, now we have the feelers that they are in cahoots and the silence from them is a conspiracy, because they are already contemplating date for inauguration, which is laughable" Most likely, you know where he's speaking from.

Indeed, a date had been fixed for the inauguration of the new executives. But unlike the young man above, I do not think it is a laughing matter. We demand that the school management come clean, or forfeit all claims to openness and transparency. 9th of December is the date; the robbers and the robbed awaits.

Paris Terror Attacks - The pain in our hearts

Paris Terror Attacks has once again reminded us of the devastating effects of terrorism. The news hit us all like a hypodermic needle. We all screamed; we all tore our robes; we all wept.

The whole world stood still as casualties increased. I couldn't contain my tears as I watched the families of those affected on CNN and the BBC. It truly was a moment of sorrow. No news ever shook the world in recent years like this one.

The whole world sympathize with the families of those affected by this monumental tragedy and hopes those responsible are brought to book soon.

Celebrities and important personalities around the world are not left out. Here are some of their messages for France.

Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode "Whether the strike is within the city, via plane hijack or in traffic, terrorists speak the same language of force, violence and suppression.
We commiserate with the French Government over last Friday's terror attacks in Paris which killed over 120 people" As if that wasn't enough he went on to say:

“On behalf of the government and good people of Lagos State, I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to your good self, the French government and the entire French citizens over last Friday’s terror attacks in Paris. The dastardly act was no doubt an attack on the civilised world and humanity and we share in your grief. Whether the strike is within the city, through plane hijack or in traffic, terrorists speak the same language of force, violence and suppression. But the civilised world should not only resist terror, we must defeat it by every means possible. And this is why the whole world is standing behind France at these trying times to say no to terror and every form of extremism,”

Barrack Obama, "This is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values we share. We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance the people of France need to respond.”

Justin Bieber added, “Had a great first show but just heard about what happened in Paris. Thoughts and prayers with everyone #PrayForParis”

These were just a few of the flood of responses that hit the air soon after the attack. The world is still grieving and the best time to act is now.

This is not the first, but this can be the last. Let us stand up and condemn terrorism. Let us fight and make terrorism a story of the past. Let us say NO to acts of terrorism, and let us do so now.

UNILAG New Hall Residents Performs Tribute To Oluchi

Sodeinde Hall, the most populous hostel in New Hall and UNILAG as a whole performed a tribute to Oluchi Anekwe, the 300 level Business Administration student who was electrocuted early last month.

The song titled "Far Away" was performed on the last day of the Hall's Week by four of its residents.

According to a statement by the Hostel's Chairman, Comrade Sheriff Lanre, the song was meant to sympathize as well as show solidarity to the parents of the deceased.

Food Science and Technology - What You Should Know

A lot of uncertainty has often trailed fresh graduates who read food Science and Technology. Most imagine that since it is a field less known and not so lucrative in this part of the world, the future would always look bleak and uninspiring. Well, that may be true. Why? Because what is obtainable in most advanced part of the world can, in most cases, be obtained here as well. It would only require you to think outside the box and most importantly, adapt whatever idea it is you have to local demands. That's right, local demands!

Bearing in mind the plausible nature of my audience including individuals not in the field, let's run a quick explanation on what food Science and Technology is all about.

Food Science and Technology is a discipline that draws from several other fields of study such as microbiology, chemical engineering and nutrition. It is essentially the combined study of science and engineering to process, evaluate, package and distribute food. It is an attempt to better understand food processes and ultimately improve food products for the general public. Food Scientists basically engage in various research to come up with best methods to preserve our food and save us resources.

Monumental results of their effort is the multitudinous packaged consumables we find in every supermarkets and grocery stores today. Don't say wow just yet. Because as far as I'm concerned, I'm still sounding pretty abstract. Let's throw that ball at something we can all relate to, shall we?

Supposing you are a palm wine tapper, and overtime you discovered that your palm wine gets sour and distasteful after just a short time - say after 2-3 days. Now, you need your palm wine to stay good and healthy for consumption longer than it is. You start making concerted efforts to see your desire come to fruition. After careful study of the nutritional information in your palm wine, and trying a couple of tricks. One finally works. Yes, one has worked! Now your palm wine stays for months, retaining its fresh and satisfying taste. That's a major breakthrough on your part in preserving that particular food. There you are. Food Scientists and Technologists do just that.

You may be inclined to ask, "how does this translate into a well paid and fulfilling career for me?" that is, if you're a Food Scientist. Here's where you can work and how you can carve a niche for yourself.

If you're the type that has an uncanny knack for carefully looking into things and analyzing them, then working as a researcher for agro-based companies is exactly where you fit. Your work in a nutshell would be conducting wide research for them and making your findings coming to bear on their products.

Or if what you like is testing things. Well, testing food products for quality and standards won't be bad. There, you can be a Nutrition Scientist.

You may decide to even man the classroom. That is, if you have flair for teaching. Teaching related courses in higher institutions just as you were taught won't be a bad one either. Pursuing a career in lecturing, though, would mean going a bit further than what you have as a degree.

Now, maybe you don't like working for anyone. A lot of people don't like working for other people as well. There’s still something for you! Why don't you work hard at producing chemicals that preserves food. Preservatives they call them. This may take years of hard work and painstaking research. But once you make a headway, trust me, it'd be well worth it.

You may even want to set up a consulting firm for yourself. Where you'd have to be consulted on such subjects as foods, diet and nutrition.

As a Food Scientist, there are a host of places, businesses, non-profit organisations and government agencies where you can find useful career opportunities as a Food Scientist. They include;
Hospitals
Bakeries
FMCG Companies/Conglomerates
Confectionaries
Farms
Food Processing Companies
Fishing/Food Preservation Companies
Food Processing Units of Hotels, Catering Companies and Fast Foods
Government Food Related Health Agencies (eg NAFDAC)
Local and International NGOs on Food, Malnutrition etc
Beverage Production Companies

Who says your career need be boring if you don't want it to?

UNILAG Students - Enough is Enough to Bedbugs!

The students of University of Lagos who stay on the campus hostels have raised a defiant fist to Bedbugs and the school management.

"Enough is enough" Was the mantra as almost students from all hostels woke up by 2:00am to protest and demand for a change to all the bunks and beds in their hostels.

The protest which started at Sodeinde hostel made its way to Makama and and Madam Tinubu Halls before visiting Eni Njoku and others.

Their purpose is clear, their songs are one, their voices have hit a crescendo. We wait to see if the school management will listen to their cry or turn a deaf eye.

Fashola, Ruben Abati others storms Unilag

"I am not a youth... And if you see individuals of about 50 something years posing as youth leaders, it is because you left a vacuum that has to be filled." Was one remark Raji Fashola, the former Lagos State governor made which will remain evergreen in the memory of youths.

He made the above remark at this year's Rise Networks sponsored Nigerian Commemoration of the United Nations International Youth Day held in the University of Lagos. This year's event was themed: Youth Civic Engagement: The Significant Role of Youth in Politics and Public Life.

Fashola charged Nigerian youths to jettison political apathy and start engaging themselves more in politics. This he said will not only keep them abreast of what is going on in government, but will also compel transparency and accountability from elected public officials.

Notable political sages that graced the occasion included Chief Dele Momodu, C.E.O Ovation Magazine, Dr. Ruben Abati, Special Adviser on Media & Publicity to former President, and popular musician Timi Dakolo amongst others.

UNILAG Lecturer Slaps Mass Comm Student For Coming Late to Class

Dr. Majekodunmi, a no-nonsense Political Science Lecturer at the University of Lagos slapped a female Mass comm student (name withheld) for coming late to her class.

According to an eye witness, the Lecturer had ordered the door to the class to be shut after she came in. Shortly after that, a couple of Mass Communication students who were equally offering her course showed up. While one of the student was trying to explain why they came late, she walked up and slapped her on the face.

This infuriated all the students who were witness to the assault and they promptly rambled to the Dean of Students' Affairs office where they were advised to put their complaints into writing.

Stick around as more unfolds

England to Test Roads That Charges Electric Cars

Nothing scares drivers of electric cars more than the thought of running out of charge in the middle of nowhere. There’s even a term for this fear: “range anxiety.”

To quell range anxiety, and hopefully encourage more drivers to choose electric vehicles, England is testing an under-road charging system that would recharge batteries while cars drive.

“The potential to recharge low emission vehicles on the move offers exciting possibilities,” said Transport Minister Andrew Jones in an official statement. “The government is already committing £500 million over the next five years to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology.”

Trials, slated to begin later this year, will involve installing charging systems underneath mock roads designed to replicate real highway conditions. In these “dynamic charging” systems, coils are buried beneath the asphalt of special charging lanes, offering contactless charging to vehicles fitted with charging “receivers.”

Unilag 2015/2016 Post Utme Form Starts

Registration for Unilag post utme is set to commence anytime soon, according to a legitimate source.

Barring any last minute delay, the Post utme form is expected to be on sale before October ending. But a close source to the school management has revealed that it may be hitting sales desks nationwide sooner than anticipated.

For regular updates on unilag post utme, follow @dannykrazyfomo on Twitter and send me a direct message. Or mail me on thakrib@gmail.com

Unilag Post Utme; How To Calculate Aggregate Scores

Calculating your aggregate scores after post utme can be quite tasking and confusing. And trust me, Unilag has a unique way of doing this. Here is a detailed description of how to go about it.

The formula is the sum of your UTME SCORE divided by 8 and your POST UTME SCORE divided by 2.

For instance; if you score 290 in UTME and went on to score 70 in POST UTME, your aggregate score will be calculated thus:

UTME Score = 290/8 =36.25
Post UTME Score = 70/2 =35
Aggregate Score =36.25 + 35 =71.25%

Don’t get confused, I quite understand that the post utme questions is 40. You might want to
ask, how then is it possible for me to score 70 in post utme.

This is the magic; whatever you score in post utme over 40 will be rounded up to 100, that is it will rounded up to percentage.

Let’s say for example you score 20/40. It will be the same as 20/40 multiply by(*) 100/1 which is equal to
50/100. What ever is gotten over 100 is what will be divided by 2 to get your final post utme score before combining to get the aggregate as
described above.

Your aggregate score will be measured against the cut off mark of your chosen course.
The cut off marks for all courses will be published weeks after the post utme exams.

While you wait, I wish all of you good luck. Don't forget to pray.

For any question, follow and send me a direct message on Twitter @dannykrazyfomo or email me at thakrib@gmail.com

Schwarzenegger to Zuckerberg: Bro, Do You Even Lift?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had a surprise participant on his online Q&A Tuesday: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The former California governor hopped onto Facebook to ask Zuckerberg about how he manages to find time to exercise despite being "one of the busiest guys on the planet."

"Mark, I always tell people that nobody is too busy to exercise, especially if Popes and Presidents find time,"

Schwarzenegger "So tell me how you find time to train and what is your regimen like?"

As it turns out, Zuckerberg manages to squeeze in workouts at least three times a week, he wrote in reply.

"I also try to take my dog ( https://www.facebook.com/beast.the.dog ) running whenever I can, which has the added bonus of being hilarious because that basically [is] like seeing a mop run."

ULSU - Fighting for student or self?

In the light of University of Lagos Students' Union recently released message to the students, mixed reactions have trailed this supposedly good tiding. The message reads thus:

"Have you been harassed by any Campus ShuttleShuttle operators before? Have they ordered you to get down from the bus because of "CHANGE" before? Do you want this to stop? If yes, put a call through to the union on 08165294779 or
07036319456 the next time you experience such from them. One of them was made a scape-goat today for assaulting one of our students on "change matters" to serve as deterrent to others. Kunle Adegunoye Charles ULSU PRO"

One would indeed be curious as to why ULSU took that bold step 'on behalf of the students' as it claimed. Why now? What was the motivation behind it all? We do not know for sure, but this is what we know.

Well, we know that the Union’s president, Abiodun Martins, was brutally attacked last week on his way back to school after he had reportedly visited his father at Iyana Ipaja alongside four of his cabinet members.

We also know that the incident which occasioned a full page account from ULSU was a one-sided story. Why? Because that account actually came from it's public relations officer who claimed privy to everything that occurred that fateful day, and that was the only account we relied on.

And finally, we also know that shortly after the attack, ULSU decided to crack down on bus drivers that plies the school route.

Do we take this to mean that ULSU had no previous knowledge of the constant harassment students have been facing in the hands of bus drivers? Or was the crackdown actually triggered by the attack on its president? The ratio decidendi may actually run so deep that it would be quite tasking to pinpoint its origin.

Telling us that "one of them (the drivers) was made a scape-goat today..." begs to question if this is totally to protect students' rights or an axe-grinding of some sort.

While it is glaring that the president's aides have been derelict in their primary calling to protect their principal, ULSU should be reminded that the powers vested on them by the students shall and cannot be used to settle personal vendetta.

French President Holds Emergency Meeting Over NSA Intercepts

French President Francois Hollande is holding an emergency meeting with the country's top security officials to respond to WikiLeaks documents saying that the U.S. National Security Agency eavesdropped on the last three French presidents.

A French presidential aide said Wednesday's meeting was convened to evaluate the information released and draw relevant conclusions. The aide was not authorized to be publicly named.

The documents published in French daily newspaper Liberation and investigative website Mediapart late Tuesday include material that
appeared to capture officials in Paris talking candidly about Greece's economy and relations with Germany.

Ironically, they also include discussions about American espionage of its allies.

There was no instant confirmation of the accuracy of the documents, though WikiLeaks has a track record of publishing intelligence and
diplomatic material.

WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson told The Associated Press he was confident the documents were authentic, noting that WikiLeaks' previous mass disclosures — including a large cache of Saudi diplomatic memos
released last week — have proven to be accurate.

The release appeared to be timed to coincide with a vote in the French Parliament on a bill allowing broad new surveillance powers, in particular to counter terrorist threats. The Senate approved it Tuesday and the lower house of parliament is expected to give it final approval
Wednesday.

The release prompted uproar among French politicians, although it didn't reveal any huge surprises or secrets. France is among several U.S. allies that rely heavily on American spying
powers when trying to prevent terrorist and other threats.

Hollande's office didn't comment beyond announcing Wednesday's security meeting, though his Socialist Party issued an angry statement sayingsaying the reports suggest "a truly stupefying state
paranoia." Even if the government was aware of such intercepts, the party said, that doesn'tmean "that this massive, systematic, uncontrolled eavesdropping is tolerable."

An aide to Hollande's predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy told The AP that the former president considers these methods unacceptable, especially from an ally. The aide was not
authorized to be publicly named.

There was no immediate comment from former President Jacques Chirac, also reportedly targeted by the eavesdropping.

U.S. National Security Council spokesman Ned Price released a statement Tuesday evening saying the U.S. is "not targeting and will not
target the communications of President Hollande."

"We do not conduct any foreign intelligence surveillance activities unless there is a specific and validated national security purpose," Price added. "This applies to ordinary citizens andand world leaders alike. We work closely with France on all matters of international concern, and the French are indispensable partners."

Price did not address claims that the U.S. had previously eavesdropped on Hollande or his predecessors.

Ever since documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden showed in 2013 that the NSA had been eavesdropping on the
cellphone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it had been understood that the U.S. had been
using the digital spying agency to intercept the conversations of allied politicians.

Buhari’s First Blunder as Nigeria’s President

A political analyst, Mr. Ifeduba ThankGod has criticised the decision by President Muhammadu Buhari to relocate the central command of the military to Maiduguri, Borno, to intensify the fight against Boko Haram insurgency. He described the move as the height of unprofessionalism and the most senseless decision any president has ever taken. He said this was because the people who work at the command centre were not regular combatant soldiers and as such would not contribute any more than they could from Abuja or anywhere for that matter.

According to Mr. Ifeduba, this wrong decision called for a revisit of Buhari’s certificate scandal and how he came about his title of Major General when he was incapable of simple kindergarten Military Decision. He added that if this move by President Buhari made sense, then countries like America would as well have to relocate their military command to Afghanistan, Iraq etc.

Muhammadu Buhari is Nigerian President

Muhammadu Buhari has been sworn in as Nigeria's 6th civilian president since independence in 1960.

It marked the first time in Nigeria's history that an incumbent elected President peacefully transferred power to an elected leader of the opposition.

He ran unsuccessfully for the office of President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the March 2015 elections. Buhari won the 2015 general election, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

Chinese teacher executed for raping, sexually abusing 26 young girls at his school

A former teacher has been executed for raping and sexually abusing 26 children at his school in China.

Li Jishun was convicted of having raped or sexually abused girls aged from four to 11, the state-run news agency Xinhua said.

The abuse took place in 2011 and 2012 when he was a teacher at a primary school, it added.

Li was put to death on Thursday by a court in Tianshui in the northwestern province of Gansu.

He had been handed the heaviest punishment possible because of the harm caused to the children and the extremely negative social impact of the case, the report said.

“He took advantage of those who were both childish and timid and committed his acts in dormitories or classrooms,” Xinhua reported.

It cited China’s Supreme People’s Court as saying the number of child sexual abuse cases have risen in recent years.

Some 7,145 cases were reported across the country from 2012 to 2014.

BEING THE PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ UNION PRESIDENT, COMRADE ABIODUN MARTINS ON THIS DAY 26TH MAY, 2015 AT THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING, STUDENTS’ UNION BUILDING, AKOKA, LAGOS.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the most preferred University – the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride, University of Lagos. Today’s media briefing is principally designed to discuss and reveal to the whole world issues bothering on the welfare of our students, state of the nation and our expectation from the incoming government led by President elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

ULSU’s ACHIEVEMENTS DURING ITS 47 DAYS IN OFFICE.
It is indeed note-worthy that this administration will be celebrating its 50th days in office on Friday 29th of May, the same day Buhari’s administration will be kick-start and its achievement has made plain the union is back and back for good. It is saddening to note that our inauguration coincided with an abysmal fall in the national grid with its adjourning effect leading to epileptic power supply and water shortage in the University environment, which later transpired to the series of protest we curtailed in our first month in office. With ULSU’s intervention, the situation was fairly ameliorated, as our discussion with the management yielded results.

Prior to our assumption of office on the 9TH of April, 2015, students who were victims of late course registration had been advised to put forward letters of deferment for the semester, but we came in and stood for them as we indicated during our different manifestos. We helped negotiate the deferment decision be rescinded, and to the glory of God, it was achieved. That was the first hurdle.

Within this period, we also embarked on a herculean task in ensuring our students who had some courses to edit were attended to. Not only were they assured, they were also allowed to sit for their examination without nursing any fear of eligibility.
Our success transcends beyond the stratosphere of the University campus. The University of Lagos Students’ Union is known for different roles it has played in the times past in ensuring students’ welfare across the nation, and the world at large, is made a topmost priority. With Nostalgia, we can lay claim to Comrade Maiyegun, the then ULSU president, ‘Alli must go’ led struggle during Gen. Babangida’s regime. With pride, we reminisce in the fact that Comrade Oluwole Sowore and Comrade Dele Ashiru, then presidents of ULSU, made their footprints in the sands of time.

It was on this precedence we strongly condemned in strong terms the Al-shabbab killings of our colleagues in far-away Kenya and also the xenophobic attack on Nigerians in South Africa. We not only responded with our press-release indicating our resolution and ultimatum, we also marched down to the South African embassy to show our discontent. These and many more we did within30 days of our administration.

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE ON PROFESSOR RAHMAN BELLO, THE VICE CHANCELLOR OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS AND PROF G.B BABAWALE, THE DEAN STUDENTS AFFAIRS OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS.
We, the executives of the University of Lagos Students’ Union hereby pass a “VOTE OF CONFIDENCE” on Prof Rahmon Bello, the Vice Chancellor of the University of First Choice and Nation’s Pride and Prof G.B Babawale, The Dean of Students’ Affairs for their outstanding roles in lifting the proscription on the Students Union after ten years. Their predecessors never dared to achieve this feat due to selfish reasons that were to their benefits and cronies.

These outstanding scholars in their respective field took it upon themselves in a short span of time by putting in place processes that finally led to the lifting of the proscription placed on the students union since the 19th January, 2005.
Since the inauguration of our executives we have been enjoying tremendous support from the management team but we are anticipating further cooperation especially in the areas of executing projects that are beneficial to our students.

REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR, ON THE OCCASION OF THE PRESENTATION OF HAND OVER NOTES TO THE PRESIDENT-ELECT, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, GCFR THURSDAY, 28TH MAY, 2015.

PROTOCOLS

I welcome you all to this occasion of the formal presentation of the Hand-over notes of my Administration to the in-coming Administration of the President-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.

This event and tomorrow’s inauguration of a new administration are truly historic as it is the first time in the history of our nation that we are witnessing the democratic and orderly transfer of power at the Federal level from one political party to another.

The Hand-over notes which we now present, contain the governance philosophy, strategies, policies, programmes and activities of my Administration for the period – 2011-2015. Also to be found in the notes are the objectives, targets and implementation strategies, achievements and challenges of our key policies, schemes, initiatives as well as the status of commitments and liabilities of the various MDAs.

As we hand over the affairs of the nation, it is appropriate to recall that at inception, in May 2011, we committed ourselves to consolidating national unity through democratization and good governance. Our assessment then, and our firm belief ever since, is that the unity of Nigeria, the security, well-being, greater freedoms and opportunities for all citizens must remain the primary objectives of government.

The Agenda for National Transformation which we did our best to implement consisted of clear and consistent governance strategies, policies, plans, programmes and projects, in all facets of our national life. Emphasis was placed on human and state security, democratization, sound economic management, as well as structural and institutional reforms.

Our foremost concern was the unity of Nigeria. In keeping with that concern, we engineered a process that began with a review of issues outstanding from previous Constitutional Conferences by the Belgore Committee. After that, we widened political consultations through a National Dialogue that was orchestrated through the Okurounmu Committee. These culminated in the all-inclusive National Conference which unanimously reaffirmed that Nigeria must remain united and indivisible.

The Conference also made resolutions and recommendations for serious constitutional, political and governance reforms, which we have forwarded to the National Assembly for appropriate legislative action. It is our hope that the incoming Government will accord the Report of the National Conference the very high priority that it deserves, as a genuine expression of the will of our people.

The recognition that the starting point for good governance is the legitimacy of the government itself informed our commitment to promoting free and fair elections.

It also motivated innovations in the management and conduct of elections which we undertook. Hopefully, in the years ahead, those innovations will be properly and fully implemented so that Nigerians will be even more assured of the integrity of the electoral system and the legitimacy of any government that it produces.

To strengthen the social contract between the government and the governed, we institutionalized the rule of law as well as the independence of the legislature and the judiciary.  We also promoted group and individual freedoms. As a result, there is vast expansion in democratic, social and economic space for all citizens.

11.Our nation and citizens faced many new challenges over the past four years but the greatest was the vastly increased menace of Boko Haram with their mindless terror, mass killings, utter ruthlessness, kidnapping of innocent children and other unspeakable acts of brutality.

Bill Gates Thinks This Is the Deadliest Threat to Humankind

In the next 20 years, is it likely that nuclear war, gigantic earthquakes or asteroids could kill 20 million people? Bill Gates doesn't think so.

But he did tell Vox that that such numbers could be felled by a major outbreak of disease — something the 59-year-old billionaire believes has a "well over 50%" chance of happening in his lifetime.

"The Ebola epidemic showed me that we're not ready for a serious epidemic, an epidemic that would be more infectious and would spread faster than Ebola did. This is the greatest risk of a huge tragedy," Gates said, claiming that a serious epidemic could kill more than 10 million people a year

Florida Man Falls Asleep While Robbing a House

A burglar from Sarasota, Florida reportedly fell asleep while breaking into a home over the weekend.

A woman who lived in the house told Sarasota Police officers she woke up around 7.20 a.m. on Saturday to find 29-year-old Timothy Bontrager sleeping on her sofa, reports WTSP.

When she asked what he was doing in her house, Bontrager reportedly apologized. After telling him she was going to phone the police, the burglar started walking around the living room and left the house, making off with her wallet, driver’s license, credit cards and personal checks.

Bontrager, who was picked up by police walking along a nearby road, has been charged with felony burglary of an occupied dwelling.

This May Be the Future of Solar Power

A company in Sweden is claiming to have designed a system that can convert 34% of sunlight into solar energy, potentially changing the future of solar power.

Ripasso, the company behind the development, is currently testing the product in South Africa’s Kalahari desert. The 34% power conversion is around double that of normal solar panels, reports The Guardian.

Though the product is new, the idea is actually pretty old. The Guardian notes the idea for the technology was actually developed in the 1800s by a Scottish engineer and clergyman.

U.N. Warns of ‘Slaughter’ in ISIS-Held Refugee Camp

The United Nations warned Friday of a “potential massacre” in the Palestinian refugee camp in Syria that was partially seized by militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS).
ISIS now controls roughly half of the Yarmouk camp, which is home to some 18,000 people, according to the U.N.
“Today, this hour, we are looking at nothing short of the potential massacre of the innocents,” Chris Gunness, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, said in a call with journalists on Friday.
"We have called for a cease-fire," Gunness said. "We have called for humanitarian access so that people can have aid administered to them where they are."
The camp is located in the outskirts of the capital Damascus, which is mostly controlled by government forces.
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon warned that the refugee camp “is beginning to resemble a death camp.”
